Menstrual Period Chastity 101

Let’s talk about period chastity in a kinky BDSM context! We’ll cover what it is, how you can do it, and some fun ideas to give it a try in your own relationship.

What is Period Chastity?

You’ve probably heard of chastity. It’s the idea of abstaining only from orgasms or from any sexual pleasure entirely (depending on your definition).

Within the context of kink, chastity is usually a two-person activity. One person “demands” the chastity of their other partner who agrees to provide it. (However, lots of people play with chastity, solo, to challenge themselves and feed their kinks!)

Period Chastity is a specific subset of chastity based on the commanding partner’s menstrual cycle. Each time the commanding partner (commonly called a “keyholder” in chastity circles!) gets their period, their partner is now required to be chaste.

Period chastity may be enjoyed by couples who otherwise don’t use chastity for long durations. The keyholder may particularly enjoy that her partner has to “suffer” for the same duration that her own body is causing inconveniences.

Period Chastity has some pretty cool benefits:

  • If the menstruating partner doesn’t like intercourse during their period, it’s a clearly communicated “no” for the duration.
  • The typical bleeding cycle of 5-7 days is a short enough span to be approachable to most chastity kinksters.
  • The removal of intercourse off the “menu” can encourage both partners to find alternative ways to enjoy pleasure, if desired.
  • It can feel intimate as you both are undergoing a temporary, frustrating experience at the same time.
  • It can require the chaste partner to become more in-tune with the commanding partner’s body as they will become very familiar with their menstrual cycle.

People who play with period chastity may skip some months, and they may otherwise play with chastity throughout the rest of the month too. Period chastity may just be another type of chastity that they add occasionally.

Does Period Chastity Require a Chastity Belt?

Just like any type of chastity, period chastity can be done with a chastity device – but it can also be done with the honor system. If you and your partner love the look and feel of a chastity device, have at it. It can be a fun symbol of your dynamic.

If you don’t own a chastity device, are concerned about the risks, OR you haven’t worn a chastity device for multiple days at a time, I’d recommend going with the honor system. Instead of using a device, the denied person is expected to simply resist their impulses – which can be a sexy test of their self-control too!

If the denied person hasn’t used a chastity device for seven days at a time, this is NOT the time to start! It can be tempting to want to jump straight into wearing a chastity cage for the keyholder’s full period, but this is likely to be rife with problems. Not only is it likely that the brand-new device won’t be a great fit, but if your skin isn’t used to wearing it, you can cause rashes, cuts, and more.

Instead, if you’re brand new to chastity devices and want to use them for a chastity period lock, I recommend aiming for a few months in the future. Between now and then, start going through my Chastity Training Plan to ready your brain and body for the full cycle’s wear.

“Luckily” for you, most menstruating people do it on a regular basis, so there will be another menstrual cycle for you to wear a device. Stick with the honor system for your period chastity play until then.

Fun Ways to Play with Period Chastity

If you want to play with the idea of period chastity, the denied person simply needs to be chaste throughout the keyholder’s menstrual cycle. That’s it! Honestly, it’s a pretty straightforward kink.

How you choose to go about accessorizing that kink, however, offers some opportunities.

Here are some play options for a period kink from a femdom point-of-view:

  • Choose the sexual denial severity. Chastity doesn’t have to be a full denial of all pleasure. While orgasms are usually off the table in most forms of chastity (but they don’t have to be. It’s YOUR play!), pleasure (with the denial of that final orgasm) doesn’t have to be.
  • Experiment with non-sexual denial. Are you into the fact that the chaste person is “suffering” alongside you? If so, consider other, non-sexual options. Remove sugary treats, command their sobriety, or remove the flavoring from their morning coffee for the span of your period.
  • Add tougher experiences. Instead of denying your chaste partner something, consider adding something that’s more challenging every day during your period. This could be an extra-long workout, completing an extra chore each day, or even requiring them to have 3 orgasms each day so that they’re so worn out they’re basically chaste.
  • Require period panties. If your submissive is into lingerie or forced feminization, require them to wear a specific pair (or color!) of panties throughout your period. You could also force them to wear absorbent period underwear or to wear pads within their own underwear as a constant reminder.
  • Use visual reminders. Especially if you aren’t using a chastity cage, you can create other visual “reminders” of this menstrual cycle chastity. To do it cheap, buy a pink/red ribbon from the store, and wrap it around their ankle or wrist as a bracelet throughout your period. You can also get a bracelet or anklet that they’re expected to wear through your period.
  • Use scent reminders. If your chaste partner is driven by smell, consider swapping out their usual personal care products with a specific set they only use during your period. Anytime they get a waft of their “menstruation” body wash, they’ll instantly be reminded of you and your period.
  • Make them part of the menstrual process. This isn’t for everyone, but a “menstrual slave” is a real kink for some! (This might include changing your tampons for you and other things, so fair warning if that squicks you out before you start exploring it!) If you don’t want to go as deep as that, you may consider making your chaste partner “part” of the experience in less in-your-face fashions. This may require laundering your period panties, buying tampons/pads for you, and even replenishing an easy-to-reach stash of your disposable period products for easier changing. (When I start my period, I place a few tampons on a bathroom shelf from the closet for easy use.)
