What Is the Exo Sex Toy?

If you have no idea what the Exo is, don’t worry; you’re not alone. Turns out, when you’re the first company to make something new, it can look a bit confusing in the sea of sex toys that mostly look like carbon copies of one another.

Exo sex toy review

The Exo masturbation sleeve is exactly that – a masturbation sleeve. It’s designed for use with a penis – regardless of gender, identification, or sexuality. By using a harness that attaches the penis sleeve onto the body, it holds a penis sleeve in place for easy thrusting and grinding. Think of it as a way for hands-free masturbation for anybody with the D.

How Does the Exo Sex Toy Work?

By strapping the masturbation sleeve with the stabilizing plate onto the abdomen, the Exo sex toy holds the waiting pleasure sleeve right on top of the penis. (In case you’re doing other things or want to prep first, the sleeve can be popped in and out of the stabilizing plate without worrying about the state of your erection.)

From there, instead of using your hands to move the penis sleeve, you use the movement of your abdomen. You essentially “thrust” or “grind” yourself into this stationary penis sleeve. The sleeve stays in one spot (thanks to the stabilizing plate on your abdomen) while you can grind and move your hips in order to slide around within the sleeve.

Who was the Exo Sex Toy Made For?

Everyone! Honestly!

If you have a penis, the Exo was made for you – in fact, that was their goal. As some people can find hand-to-genital touch anxiety-inducing (especially for those who may have body dysphoria), the Exo was designed for hands-free pleasure in a way that might feel more comfortable and natural for some bodies.

The only requirement is an erection; flaccid penises may not slide into the sleeve and will likely slip out, and attempting to use the Exo penis toy with a vagina or clitoris is not likely to do a whole lot. (Now, if that’s what you’re equipped with and you want to wear a strap-on harness and dildo, you might find that the pressure of the base of the dildo could be orgasmic for you. Totally up to you and how you want to experiment!)

Exo Sex Toy Review: How Does It Feel?

Have you ever wanted a hands-free penis sleeve to just hover on your penis for hands-free pleasure? I mean, I have – a lot. (And I’m constantly seeking out the easy equivalent for my vagina and clitoris too). I love the idea of my partner receiving a lot of pleasure from all of their pleasure zones even when I don’t necessarily have enough hands to be actively touching them. Why do humans max out at two hands? It’s unfair – especially during sex.

And that’s pretty much the magic of the Exo sex toy. Not only is it a toy inspired by and made for the trans community (which deserves all the sex toy industry love after years of being ignored – and many manufacturers still aren’t doing nearly enough to address the needs of the community), but it allows for hands-free pleasure no matter what you’re doing. This is just as true during pegging or other anal sex activities with a partner. Nothing about the Exo penis toy gets anywhere near the butt, so it leaves everything about the butt entirely open to pleasure. This means I can slide my strap-on into my partner, and even if no one has the extra “hands” to be pleasuring the penis, the Exo sex toy can do it for us.

And the Exo sex toy feels pretty darn orgasmic. My partner says it feels “like a good sleeve” – and makes a mention that his penis doesn’t have the same sensitivity as something like his mouth, so as long as it makes him cum – and does it reliably and pleasurably – he’s a happy camper. He notes that the Exo sex toy doesn’t feel as “all-encompassing” as some of our Fleshlights or penis sleeves that are just plain longer (so they over more of the penis) in length, but he says the Exo is reliably amazing on its own once he has it in place. He says it meets his penis sleeve requirements perfectly: it makes him cum reliably, intensely, and pleasurably.

He notes that finding the “right spot” for the Exo trans friendly sex toy is part of the process. You really need to target spots on the penis where you have the most sensitivity – and tend to be the most orgasmic for you. For him, that’s right underneath the head of the penis where thrusting pops the head of the penis inside and outside of the penis sleeve. For a lot of people, I imagine that’s going to be the “go-to” spot for the Exo sex toy. (The frenulum tends to be the most sensitive spot for a lot of people!)

He does make mention that he’d love to see a new sleeve from Exo that featured a “cap” attached to the sleeve. Something like the current Exo sleeve – but instead of the fully-open design, you end up thrusting into a close-ended “sleeve” that wrapped around the head. He thinks that could provide a ton of pleasure around the head of the penis and provide more of that “all-encompassing” feeling that can be so pleasurable. With the Exo’s “easy swap” sleeve design, this could easily be offered as an additional add-on – especially once Exo gets going as a company.

I mostly veto’d that idea because it’d take away my pretty hot visual of watching him use the Exo trans friendly sex toy, but I could definitely see the pleasure potential. I’m just a bit selfish in that I like watching him use it. ;)

He specifically mentions that the Exo sex toy makes him feel submissive – but he also notes that it could because he identifies that way in the first place. The movement that he has to do in order to make the penis slide into the Exo while wearing it reminds him of the exact hip movements he does while on top of me for pegging. He also says it’s the same movement that he uses for hands-free prostate massagers as well. Pretty much, the movement required much reminds him, muscle-memory-wise, of being penetrated during other types of play.

(We have had some good success with partnering the Exo with prostate massagers as well. The movement of the Exo taps the hands-free prostate massagers into the p-spot while the penis also gets pleasure from the front. Much like our pegging with the Exo, he really doesn’t last very long when we get those combos going. Again, another plus for the Exo.)

His only complaint is that it can be a bit hard to get additional lube onto the penis and sleeve while it’s actively being used. Since he can’t easily just “slide off” the penis sleeve to squirt more lube into it and onto his penis, he effectively has had to settle for trying to hold a very-deep thrust while quickly lubing the head of the penis – then going back to the regular grinding motions of the hips to enjoy the Exo sleeve sliding across his penis. With everything lubed, the Exo glides smoothly with no complaints from him.

He does note that you’re going to build up some pretty intense core and back strength by using the Exo though – especially if you like edging. He currently is tapping out around the 10 to 15 minute mark with the Exo purely due to complete muscle exhaustion – but if we keep using it for edging play, I could see it being a fun and unique way to essentially do “mini crunches” while getting really nicely rewarded at the same time. (Now I’m over here thinking about using the Exo sex toy while laying on a yoga ball to up the ab-engagement intensity.)

He also notes that he likes using the Exo for solo masturbation because it leaves both of his hands available for other things – like using a computer, sexting, or even thrusting a dildo into himself.

Exo Sex Toy Review: How Does It Fit?

We’ve found that the fit of the Exo is really, really position and body-dependent. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it definitely can change up how the Exo trans friendly sex toy feels from time-to-time.

For example, for my super-thin partner (size S in women’s), the curved design of the abdomen plate is a really weird fit when he’s laying down. It’s really far away from the concave design of his sloped stomach, and we find that, while laying down like that on his back, the Exo tends to want to slide down his sloped stomach further towards the penis. Even when really snug, it does move a bit like this. We’re thinking about trying to “anchor” the Exo’s to the back of his neck (halter-top style) with some rope to help prevent some of that.

We think it’s mostly because he’s outside the standard “norm” of slimmer “male” bodies. We both think it would likely stay in place a lot better (with the abdomen plate better fitting the curvature of a tummy) with a thicker-bodied human.

That being said, when he’s standing up or laying on his side, we find no problems like that. The abdomen plate tends to curve much better into the shape of his body, and it tends to stay a whole lot better too. We occasionally might need to pull it up, but once we figured out that the ribbon should (honestly) be tight enough to give you lumps of “fat/skin/flesh” around the ribbon, it has stayed in place so much better.

Pretty much – you can make your own fit with the ribbon design, and you can modify that fit, over and over, until it fits you exactly how you are that day. Even if you’re feeling bloated, are slim-bodied, are large-bodied, or anything in-between – it tends to meet you where your body is – which is fantastic.

Exo Sex Toy Review: The First Use?

With unique sex toys like this, there’s usually a little bit of a learning curve. That’s true of any unique and innovative sex toy – whether it’s the Lora DiCarlo Ose 2 or Arcwave Ion. It just comes with the territory of being a brand new type of sex toy – which is a good thing in the world of sex toys!

The Exo penis toy is no different. Finding the perfect “fit” and “customization” options for your own body is going to take a bit – not to mention learning how much pressure it requires to pop the plastic pieces in or out of their respective spots. With this in mind, I’d definitely expect the first 1-3 uses of the Exo to be “experimental” trials – and don’t necessarily expect the Exo to go off swimmingly and understand all of your preferences until the 4th or 5th attempt.

The first use will definitely be focused on going back-and-forth on the instructions, ensuring you’re putting it on well, trying to figure out if you’re going to break the Exo if you push too hard (hint: you won’t. Some of the pieces just take some force behind them to move them.), figuring out the perfect spot for the penis masturbator, and learning the grinding motion required to really slide the penis in and out of the masturbator. I’d also guess that most people would do exactly what we did: which was tie-on the Exo sex toy too loosely.

If the Exo is too loose, it ends up moving as you move – which means the penis sleeve won’t stay in a stationary location which is required to offer pleasure. If the Exo is too loose, the sleeve just moves up and down with your penis – not up and down the penis like you need. As a general rule of thumb, if you aren’t getting rolls of skin on either side of the ribbon (just like you’d have with snugly-tied rope), the Exo is probably too loose and some of your problems might be attributed to the looseness of the sex toy.

Even on the first use, though, while it took us a little bit of trial-and-error to get there, my partner was still able to achieve a hands-free orgasm – and rated it pretty damn highly. It has only gotten more fluid and easy-to-use since then.

My thoughts for your first use (to hopefully alleviate some of the things we ran into):

  • Tie-on the Exo sex toy in whatever position you plan on using it – standing, laying, kneeling, etc. We found that body positioning could make the ribbon feel tighter/looser during use if we tied it on in a position that we weren’t using it in. Most commonly: It makes sense to want to tie it on while standing if you plan to lay down on the bed. However, if you do that, your weight shifts and the straps are going to be looser – which will reduce the hands-free aspects of your experience. It’s a pain, but tying it on while laying down has drastically increased how well the Exo sex toy performs.
  • Don’t attach the penis sleeve until the Exo trans friendly sex toy is on you and ready to go. Preferably don’t even attach it until you’re erect and ready to insert into it. Figuring out the exact angle where your penis will point – partnered with finding the exact place where you want the penis sleeve to stroke – means waiting to attach the penis sleeve onto the Exo. You can attach it ahead of time, but considering how difficult it can be to get the penis sleeve off again, I really recommend doing it only when you’re ready.
  • I don’t have the thumb strength to push the Exo’s penis sleeve out of the abdomen plate. The founder showed me a neat trick: just place the fastening area on the abdomen plate where the penis stroker attaches (like where your thumb should go) onto a hard, flat surface like a table or counter. Apply pressure, and you’re good to go. The penis sleeve will pop out really easily. However, that isn’t necessarily easy to do mid-sex while wearing it, so that’s why I recommend the above tip.
  • It really is easiest to clean the Exo penis toy in the shower. We almost-always get ejaculate on the ribbon itself and with four wraps around him, it means the ribbon, the plastic portions, and the sleeve itself need to be cleaned. We found this hassling in the sink and regularly knocked over things with the ribbon. It has gone a lot more easily in the shower when he’s cleaning his body anyway. (Avoid a lot of this cleaning procedure by wearing a condom with the Exo if you want.)

Since I wanted to get this review out as soon as possible, we haven’t had as much experimentation time as I generally prefer, but we’ve still gotten the Exo penis toy into our muscle memory for use. It has gone more and more smoothly every time we’ve used it. Our only on-going complaint with wearing it remains the really, really long ribbon. It’s probably about 90″ in length. This is absolutely huge for my 30″-hips partner. We’re contemplating trimming the ribbon – and we probably will after more uses. That would reduce the almost-four wraps it requires for him to wear it.

How Do I Wear the Exo Sex Toy?

Using this hands-free penis stroker is pretty easy. You literally just tie it around your waist – quite literally. The around-the-waist design is secured by a length of really-sturdy ribbon – which is pretty genius when you think about it. It’s comfortable, light-weight, easy-to-clean, and really easy to use. If double-wrapping the waist strap, it’s designed to fit a waist up to 45″, but the ribbon is VERY long, and I’d assume you could easily fit it into a person of about 85″ or so. It wouldn’t look as pretty (without the double wrapping), but it could function.

Realistically, if you wanted, you could provide your own ribbon and rethread the entirety of the Exo sex toy if you found that the included ribbon wasn’t long enough for your body.

The tie-on design really allows you to fully adjust for body width – even if your body width changes on a daily basis, you lose weight, or gain weight. It pretty much works with your body as it is, here, now (which reminds me of the Spareparts Joque harness – and how I love that “never feels like it fits wrong” no matter what my body happens to be doing that day.)

You can adjust the Exo for various height and penis lengths too. To adjust for height, you can also choose where the penis sleeve is held on the abdomen plate. The Exo offers 8 different height options which allow you to find the picture-perfect spot with your height and penis length. You can wear the sleeve lower on the abdomen – or higher on the abdomen. It all depends on what the best fit is for you, how long your torso is, where you want the Exo sleeve to fall on the penis while you use it, and how long the penis is.

You can adjust for penis thickness as well! The Exo Sex Toy Penis Sleeve is also super customizable to penis thickness with a workable erect diameter between 0.8″ and 2″. Essentially, there’s a plastic loop that “hugs” the penis sleeve itself inside of it. (You can see that in the pictures.) You can loosen – or tighten – this plastic loop to ensure that the sleeve will be similar to your penis diameter when you use it for a snug fit.

So, essentially, you wrap the ribbon around yourself, snap the ribbon into place, choose where the penis sleeve will sit, choose how tightly the penis sleeve will be gripping, add some lube, and you’re good to go. It’s a pretty fast process, and much, much easier than putting on lingerie.

(All of the instructions are included with illustrations as well to really help you figure out how to use it, so don’t worry if my written words aren’t doing it for you.)

Overall, it’ll take you a few seconds to read through and figure out what’s going on, but once you’ve done it once, it makes perfect sense and becomes second nature – and is way less complicated than trying to explain to my partner how to make me a glass of hot cocoa.

The Exo sex toy currently comes with a 14-day return policy when bought directly from My Exo. Since everyone has a unique body type and build, this allows you to give the Exo toy a try (hopefully after reading My Exo review!), and if it doesn’t fit your body type like you’d hoped, you can contact the manufacturer.

Exo Sex Toy Review: Final Thoughts

I wasn’t surprised at all that the Exo worked so well. When you have people in the sex industry who put this much time and attention into making a toy that specifically works for the bodies that they designed it for, you’re very likely going to end up with an amazing product. Not only did they spend so much time making a product that does things completely differently, but they even launched it despite a global pandemic – and I can’t even imagine how many bonus obstacles that provided.

Amazing is exactly what you get with the Exo sex toy: a pleasurable penis sleeve that’s semi-easy to hop into and definitely provides hands-free orgasms using the power of your own body. It brings to life the idea of hands-free pleasure in a way that should work for a variety of body shapes. Not only do you get some powerful, pleasurable orgasms, but it also helps you really get into body movements that leave you feeling sensual and connected with your body and orgasm.

I hope to see more improvements and options from Exo in the future – even though the Exo hands free penis stroker is already an amazing toy in its own right. (Seriously, we already love it – but see some room for various improvements and fun, new accessories). Having an easier way to snap the penis sleeve out of the abdomen plate would help with relubing and initial wearing set-ups. Offering different abdomen plate designs would probably work best for fitting the wider variety of bodies out there – including how the body can simply just change depending on whether you’re laying or standing to use the Exo. And, of course, I hope that Exo will get the chance to offer a variety of penis sleeves in the future – including some “orifice” ones that might offer a really neat visual for the user when the penis pops through the sleeve. (I understand why they went non-anatomical for a please-all approach, though!)
