Today in “technological BDSM advances”, we have the Cell Mate chastity cage. While most chastity cages have long-since used a key and small lock, the CellMate bypasses the days of manual release and goes into the new-fangled world of app-controlled releases. By connecting the Bluetooth-enabled chastity cage to the app installed on your cell phone, the CellMate offers keyless locking and unlocking. By doing this, it enables you to have a worldwide keyholder. No longer are you tied down to the physical existence of a key. Instead, your options are open when anyone, anywhere, around the world with internet and a compatible cell phone.
At least, that’s the awesome parts of it. And yeah, that sounds awesome AF.
But the execution? That’s where we start running into problems.
First, the app is relatively unfinished – at least for English speakers. The Chinese version of the app could be straight-up flawless. I don’t know. The English app has a lot of translation errors, and it makes figuring out “exactly” what you’re doing nearly impossible. There’s an option to “Find a Keyholder by Robbing”. I don’t know what the means. There are other oddly-named options within the site like “Referendum Voting”. The Terms of Service, which you must agree to in order to use the device, are completely in Chinese – even on the English version of the app. As a potential security issue, every time I unlock or relock the Cell Mate device, it also logs on my exact location – and I have no idea if it’s publishing that information or not.
Second, there are some serious safety concerns here. Like I mentioned, the CellMate is fully keyless. This sounds awesome until you realize what that actually means. That means that, without access to the app (and the device connecting flawlessly), there is no way to unlock the device. Tech malfunctions could mean being stuck in chastity until you cut it off.
Third, you really, really need to trust the chastity keyholder. Having a physical key and having to hand it to someone generally requires a bit of trust on both parties. After all, you might have seen each other a couple of times, and at the very least, in most cases, requires having seen their face, knowing things about them, or knowing their legal name and address. Essentially, there’s some sort of shared knowledge and trust before you go in. With the CellMate, a few clicks on the app, and you have a human being controlling your orgasms for you. While this sounds hot, it’s also terrifying because the app doesn’t have any “outs” build into it. Once you grant access to that person to control your device, that’s it. Until that person unlocks you, you’re in it. If that person gets bored or you piss them off and they block you, you literally are stuck in the Cell Mate with no way out. With the fleeting connection of a lot of online communication, this is a brand-new way jump-ahead to complete orgasm control without any of the trust and time that it generally takes. You need to be really careful with it.

Some improvements to the CellMate app and building in an emergency out would have drastically increased my opinion of the CellMate. There’s no reason someone shouldn’t be able to automatically unlock themselves if there’s a problem. Sure, you can argue that “defeats” the point of chastity, but if you can’t trust your partner to do what you ask them within the intent of your request, there’s no point in doing chastity in the first place. No sub I ever play with would ever take off the cage to jerk off without my permission, and if they did, that’s it. We’d be done as a couple. What I would be perfectly okay with is if they were able to automatically unlock the cage themselves if they’re in serious pain or have some ball-skin caught or aren’t able to get the app to work and they need to go for a full-body doctor’s exam in five minutes. The fact that I can’t trust the app to provide the safety net I personally feel comfortable with is exactly what I’m really wary of it. And the annoying part is that it’d be easily fixed with a simple addition in the app.
Some people have mentioned the price, but as a chastity cage that’s under $200, it’s actually on the mid-range of devices. High-quality stainless steel can run $300-400, and custom cages (which aficionados definitely recommend) are $500 plus. The Behind Barz set-up runs over a grand, and most chastity belts will be similar. You can get a base-level silicone or plastic cage in the $80-150 range, and that’s just slightly under where the Cell Mate chastity cage is priced – and the Cell Mate is full of technology. It’s pretty reasonably priced for a chastity cage, all things considered.
Essentially, I think the Cell Mate chastity cage can be a fun experience, but you need to be ready to cut it off if you own it. Unlike a lot of chastity cages where the emergency “cut out” is a far possibility in the corner of your mind, with the Cell Mate, it’s actually the only emergency out. There is no spare key. If you keep that in mind, use the app responsibly, and make sure you trust your keyholders, the Cell Mate chastity cage does provide a brand new way to experience chastity solo (like with a chastity training plan) or with a keyholder.
