UPDATE MARCH 2024: This vibrator is no longer in production. This sex toy review remains for anyone who is curious about it. While you’re here, why not check out some additional educational info – like online submissive tasks, beginner pegging positions, saran wrap bondage, and enema 101 info.

The Butterfly Kiss Platinum Edition is a new version of the original best-selling Butterfly Kiss vibrator from California Exotics. Available in multiple colors, it’s made from plastic and TPR material. Including 9 different vibration modes, this phthalate-free sex toy requires two AAA batteries for use, and it’s also waterproof for any underwater adventures you want to take.

The packaging for the Butterfly Kiss Platinum Edition is pretty basic. It comes in a basic cardboard box that displays the product with a cute butterfly design on the outside. As the box is pretty light and probably won’t hold up to anything being placed on top of it (along with being larger than the vibrator), it probably won’t work too well for storage. The packaging also includes a small slip of paper that explains how the batteries work. Most of the packaging is recyclable.

The design of the Butterfly Kiss Platinum Edition is the same as the original edition. The vibrator includes an insertable portion as well as an external portion. The insertable portion has a little bulb towards the tip while the external portion includes two butterfly ‘wings” and two “antennae” that flutter during use. The upgraded version does include more speed settings, though.

My second thought is that I’m confused as to why they upgraded other aspects of the toy but didn’t upgrade the material. Both the original and this upgraded version are made from TPR material; it looks like the Platinum *may* be made of a more stable compound of TPR since it is less see-through, but both are still made from the TPR material. I would have loved to see California Exotics upgrade their Platinum Edition into a silicone, body-safe material as they’ve been making quite a few affordable silicone toys lately.

This Butterfly Kiss vibrator uses two AAA batteries. These two batteries are easily inserted through the base of the vibrator. The vibrator’s base just easily unscrews, and the two batteries can be slipped into the base. They don’t really rattle during use, so they are semi-quiet.

To control this vibrator, you just have to press the button on the base of the toy. This button is pretty simple to press, and I haven’t had issues with accidentally pressing it during use. One of my bigger complaints about this is that you do have to push through all 9 modes if you want to turn off this sex toy, though. You can’t just hold down the button and have the toy turn off, so this is something you really don’t want to use if there’s a chance you’ll get caught while using it.

The packaging for this vibrator

The vibrations for this sex toy are definitely on the soft side. They sound like they should be stronger, but they aren’t. They are just soft. They seem to transfer better through the insertable portion than the external portion. If you apply pressure, externally, with the clitoral portion, in fact, the vibrations almost completely disappear. However, if you use a very light touch, the little butterfly wings and antennae do a slight bit of fluttering, so it really depends on what type of sensation and strength you enjoy. As for the vibrations, they probably won’t be able to be heard outside of a closed door, but they CAN be heard in the same room.

I think my biggest complaint about this vibrator is the insertable portion. It’s not floppy, but it certainly isn’t firm either. Once you insert it, it does transfer the vibrations into your body, but it really doesn’t have enough rigidity or firmness to really feel “filling” or to help hit the g-spot. However, if you’re someone that doesn’t really want to have something TOO filling or prefers just to be able to feel vibrations internally (versus actively thrusting), this may end up working better for you than if it was firmer. I personally would have preferred a bit more rigidity in the design of the insertable portion, though.

My other issue with this vibrator is that the clitoral portion is just not strong enough. I’m not sure if it’s because of the motor or the design of the sex toy, but the vibrator’s clitoral portion just doesn’t put out enough power. I’m someone that likes to use pressure against my body with vibrations, and with this g-spot toy, it’s really not possible as the vibrations pretty much go “dead” when pressure is applied. If you like the light, fluttering sensation, though, this one does have it – but not as intense of fluttering as other toys we’ve tried.

To clean this vibrator, you just have to use warm water and antibacterial soap. This vibrator is waterproof, so it’s definitely very simple to clean up. You can’t boil it or sterilize it, though, so keep that in mind. It tends to pick up a bit of lint, but not a ton, but I still recommend keeping it in a storage bag or pouch to keep it safe. It’s compatible with all types of lubricants.

Overall, the Butterfly Kiss Platinum Edition is an okay starter vibrator. It’s not made of the fully-safe materials I would have liked to have seen with a Platinum Edition toy, but it does have other upgrades. The vibration and design of the vibrator may only appeal to certain preferences, but it also is a bit hard to find a similar toy that has these same properties, so it really depends on your own preference as to whether the Butterfly Kiss Platinum Edition will be a “win” for you. If you enjoy internal vibrations without too much fullness or thrusting, this one could work for you.
