Which Odile Toy Should I Get: Absolute or Discovery?

Let’s talk about the Odile toy – and anal dilators.

In particular, let’s talk about the Odile anal dilators. While anal dilation sets have existed for years now, Odile offers something new: an “all-in-one” anal dilation experience. Instead of multiple toys, the Odile’s unique design offers incremental size increases (and decreases).

So, instead of swapping from one toy to the next, you simply turn the key at the base of the Odile, and the Odile gets 1 millimeter thicker.

Two hands hold an Odile Absolute. One hand is twisting the key at the base while the opposing hand holds the base of the Odile to help keep it stable.

Not only does this allow you to choose the exact size of your anal stretching, but it also makes it less likely that you’ll select the “wrong” size. This “choose your own diameter” system, essentially, lets you adjust the size of the toys on the fly. If you wish the toy would be thicker, you simply increase the diameter. If you wish it would be slimmer, in most cases, you can simply decrease the diameter.

…and, as the Odile toy is made from body-safe silicone and features no inflatable or electronic parts, it’s a lot more reliable (and a lot less stinky) than some of the rubber/latex inflatable toy options out there as well. It’s just a steel expanding interior covered by a layer of silicone.

Focus on Size

So, should you get the Odile Absolute or the Odile Discovery?

Honestly, out of all of the sex toy choices out in the world, this is one of the simplest: choose based on size.

The Odile Absolute is, essentially, the exact same measurements as the original, first-generation Odile. The rounded (not tapered) tip leads into a shaft that is 1″ in diameter, unexpanded. Slowly turn the key, and the Odile Absolute will reach a full 1.5″ in diameter. As the average biological penis size is in the ballpark of 1.5″ in diameter, the Absolute’s job is to essentially take you from a 1″ diameter size all of the way to “pretty decently prepped for intercourse”.

However, the Odile Discovery is the new kid on the block. The Discovery’s unique shape is crafted to be someone’s first anal toy. The 0.5″ diameter is really slim – like, really slim. It’s about the size of my fingertip.

This 0.5″ diameter is just the tip, however. From there, the Odile Discovery features an extremely tapered design; it expands as you insert it all the way to a 1″ diameter shaft towards the base. If (or when) you get the toy fully inserted, that 1″ diameter shaft (at the base) is the only part that expands when you turn the key of the Odile. That 1″ diameter base will expand to a nice, 1.35″ shaft while the 0.5″ diameter tip stays the exact same size. (I recommend watching my video that’s later in this post; it really does a great job showcasing what I mean.)

The below image helps explain it too:

This means that, depending on your level of anal play, you may or may not be able to insert the Odile Discovery fully the first time. If you’re unfamiliar with the sensations, you may end up staying with just the tip inserted – and that’s totally okay!

With that in mind, the Odile Discovery also doesn’t expand to the same 1.5″ diameter that the Odile Absolute does, either. The Discovery’s max diameter lands in the 1.35″ range – which is still closer to intercourse but not, necessarily, thick enough to be the final prep for anal intercourse.

So, should you get the Odile Discovery or the Odile Absolute?

Go with the Odile Discovery if you’re brand new to anal – and know that inserting anything over 1 finger isn’t comfortably easy. Patient use of the Odile Discovery can get you from one finger to two/three finger size over time.

Go with the Odile Absolute if you know that you can insert a few fingers already – and are sure that you want to primarily use this toy to prep for anal intercourse (or “intercourse” with an average sized dildo.)

Do I NEED an Odile?

No, you don’t.

You can really do anal dilation with pretty much any (anal-safe) toy out there. You don’t need an anal dilation kit. You don’t need an Odile.

That being said, the Odile’s “thing” is that it works to make anal dilation really approachable. So, instead of wondering what toy is the right size for a beginner, bam: Odile Discovery is the answer for virtually anyone. Since its diameter goes from 0.5″ all the way from 1.35″, it pretty much targets any anal beginner.

This is part of what makes the Odiles so nifty; it’s hard to be wrong. If you need something thicker, you can just increase the Odile’s diameter all the way up to a 1.35″/1.5″. With the Discovery’s 0.5″ diameter, it’s just really, really unlikely that you’ll need something smaller. (Discovery’s tip is about the size of my finger).

So, instead of worrying about what to buy or accidentally buying something too big/too small, the Odile fits that happy place in the middle where you pretty much just adjust its size to the size for your body.

Some Odile Toy Caveats

While I’m really, really in love with the Odile toy’s uniqueness and design, there are a few caveats here.

For one, you need to be able to reach both hands to your asshole (or vagina, really. Depends on where you’re using it) if you want to change the thickness mid-use. This isn’t possible for many people.

At the same time, while doing that reach, you need to be able to firmly grip with both hands. One hand needs to be able to firmly grip the base of the Odile while the other hand simultaneously grips and twists the key on the Odile. So, not only do you need to be able to touch the Odile while in your chosen position, but you also need to be able to get enough wiggle room to be able to grip and twist with both hands. This is definitely not something you can easily use while your hands are tied up in bondage.

It’s also worth noting that, unlike standard butt plugs or dildos, you can’t “sit” or “lay” on top of the Odile. This protruding key that adjusts the thickness of the plug also happens to make the toy painful to sit on or put any weight on top of it. So you’ll need to stick to standing positions, doggy style positions, and positions where you lay on your side. You could get creative with a Liberator Wedge or other sex furniture to get your ass far enough in the air (while laying on your back) to prevent the Odile from pressing into the bed if you wanted.

The point being: its unique design does provide limitations for various body types. It’s a unique and awesome design, but it requires some things out of its user – especially if you’re using it solo.

But honestly, once Odile releases a thick version for anal stretchers, we’ll probably be using it on a regular basis for our femdom anal stretching practices. We’re looking forward to it.

Odile 1 vs Odile 2?

The Odile Absolute and Odile Discovery are both the “next generation” from the original Odile that was released in August 2021.

While the first generation Odile was available in multiple colors, the second Odile generation is available in two colors – each with its own shape. The Odile Absolute is a teal blue while the Odile Discovery is a vibrant purple; both are pretty colors, but you get the color you get based on the size you need.

This new, second generation of the Odile also added a few features that I requested long back on my original Odile review:

  • “Wings” at the base that provide an additional barrier against over-insertion and better leverage for gripping
  • Removal of the “anal only” warnings within the instructions. There’s really no reason these can’t be used vaginally.

The new generation of Odiles also includes plastic tabs on the plastic base that help provide resistance and give you a “gripping” place when trying to turn the key at the base of the Odile. I, personally, default to using the silicone wings for gripping and find the plastic additions to not be a good fit for me, but hey – any additions that make it easier to grip are A+ in my book.

All that being said: unless the above issues really bothered you on your current Odile version, I don’t see much of a reason to upgrade. If those issues keep you from using your Odile – or if the Odile’s original 1″ minimum diameter was a barrier, you might consider upgrading to the second generation.

And if you don’t have an Odile yet, well, the first generation of Odile is discontinued, so you’ll be choosing from these new two options now (Discovery and Absolute).

Odile Toy Comparison Video

Prefer seeing things in a video format? Yeah, I get that. Let me walk you through the different aspects of the Odile first generation and the Odile second generation in this video:

Odile Absolute or Odile Discovery?

To wrap it up, let’s put it plainly:

Select the Odile you want based on the sizes you want to insert – and the sizes you can insert.

If you can’t insert 1″ yet (and that’s totally normal!), go with the Odile Discovery. Its starter 0.5″ diameter will help you slowly acclimate yourself to a 1″ diameter.

If you can insert 1″ – but want to prep for toys (or people!) larger than that – skip the Discovery and go to the Odile Absolute. It gives you wider range of size possibilities. Its only requirement is that you be able to insert a 1″ diameter item already.

If you already have an Odile, first generation, consider upgrading if you were concerned about overinsertion, couldn’t insert the 1″ diameter, or had issues gripping onto the base of the toy while turning the key. Otherwise, the toys are very, very similar, and your current Odile 1 will continue to serve you well!
