How to Measure for a Chastity Cage

When you enter the world of chastity device wearing, you have two options: you can purchase a pre-made, off the shelf cage or you can commission custom-designed chastity. No matter which way you go, though, you’ll still need to know how to measure for chastity cage.

Most kinksters start with a pre-made, off the shelf chastity cage. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this; in fact, I recommend it! Not only are they much, much cheaper, but they also let you explore what things you do and don’t like in chastity without a hundreds of dollars invested into the process with each cage.

The one big downside? Every single pre-made, off-the-shelf chastity cage is: you guessed it. Pre-made. This means it’s made to specific measurements. If you only pay attention to the pretty pictures, it can be easy to accidentally buy a cage too big (or too small) for your own body. A wrong-sized cage can be painful, rub off skin, slice open flesh, or simply slide right off of your body. That’s probably not the “inescapable orgasm control” you were looking for.

The only way to combat this and make sure you’re getting the fit you want, is with precise and accurate measurements. But how exactly do you measure your own penis? Let’s take a look at the process and some of the potential pitfalls you could face.

How to Measure for a Chastity Cage: The Measurements You NEED

On the surface, measuring for a cage is a relatively simple process. You need to know how long your penis is for the cage tube (the part that covers your head and shaft), and how girthy your penis is for the cage ring (the part that goes around both your penis and your scrotum).

Both are easy measurements to take, so let’s start with the length.

Two illustrated penises shown side by side. Text on the image reads: Measuring cage length. Hold it out at a 90 degree angle from your body. Measure from your pubic bone to the tip of your penis. Length measurement might be called "Cage length" or "Tube length". For my How to Measure for a Chastity Cage article.

First, Get Your Length

Cup your flaccid penis with one hand, and hold it out at a 90 degree angle from your body. Don’t try to stretch it out or make it straight, just hold it in a natural position in front of your body. Lay a tape measure (preferably a soft flexible one) along the top of your penis, with one end firmly against your pubic bone, and the other at the tip of your penis.

How to Measure for a Chastity Cage PROTIP: If you don’t have a soft, flexible tape measure, you can use a piece of string. Use the string to take the measurement, marking where your length ends. Then place the flat piece of string next to your ruler or construction-style tape measure.

Note down this measurement.

This length measurement corresponds to the length measurements found in the product descriptions of nearly all retailers, but sometimes it might be called “cage length” or “tube length”. You should aim for a length that is as close as possible to your penis so that the cage fits correctly and restricts your penis appropriately.

If you’re in-between lengths, most people like to err on the side of the smaller size. This gives the penis less room to “expand” which is usually the most common reason chastity devices wearers experience pain.

Preventing Pitfalls #1: For Real: Be Accurate about this Measurement

While you typically have wanted to be as erect as possible for the “biggest” number you can still state is “not lying”, when measuring for the cage you want the opposite. Your penis will be flaccid while you wear it, so you need to get measurements while it’s flaccid too!

If you find yourself getting hard during the measurement, the best option is to simply stop and wait till later. You can try and make yourself flaccid with ice or a cold shower, but typically your penis will be smaller when it gets cold so you could end up underestimating your length.

In fact, I usually recommend men take a warm shower before measuring. Generally your penis will be slightly larger when warm, and generally it’ll be warm more often than cold so measuring just after a shower should give you your most natural measurement.

Prevent Pitfalls #2: Take This Measurement….a Lot

This isn’t like pants shopping. When buying a pair of jeans, you take your waist measurement, look at the website, and order your size. Your penis length fluctuates so much more throughout the day – but I don’t need to tell you that, do I?

If you only take one length measurement, you’re only getting the measurement of your penis in that exact moment in that exact temperature. And, let’s be honest here: if you’re excited to measure for a chastity cage, you’re definitely skewing the measurement. ;)

Instead, take multiple measurements throughout multiple times of day throughout a week. In the end, average them for your final “length” measurement.

Illustration shows a flaccid shaft with a ribbon tied around the base. Text on the image reads: Measuring Ring Size. Find the girth of both your penis and scrotum. If you don't have a flexible tape measure, use a piece of string. To convert your number into a width measurement, you'll need to divide it by 3.14. For my How to Measure for a Chastity Cage article.

Next, Measure Your Full Package Base Circumference

You also need the girth of both your penis and scrotum. This is where the base ring of the chastity cage will sit. Too tight of a ring, and it’ll be uncomfortable at best. (And cut into your skin at worst!) Too loose of a measurement, and the whole cage will slide off.

Luckily, getting this measurement is equally simple once you know what to do. All you need to do is wrap the tape measure all the way around the penis and scrotum, at the base of your penis (where it connects to your pubic bone). The same tips as above apply, with an average of multiple measurements on different days at different times giving the most accurate result.

This “around the whole package” number is the circumference. Unfortunately, most chastity cage manufacturers express their cage specifications in diameter. Fortunately, this is decently easy math. Just divide the circumference number you took by pi (which is 3.14). Or be lazy and use a calculator like this one.

Preventing Pitfalls #3: Rushing Your Ring Measurement

Getting the right ring measurements is crucial to ensuring a comfortable fit. Too tight and you can restrict blood flow. Too loose and it can slide right off.

If your girth measurement was 6 inches, you’d be looking for a ring of 1.91 inches (6 divided by 3.14).

Unlike the penis tube where we can err a bit on the side of smaller, you really do want your chastity cage’s ring to be as perfectly matched to your base circumference as best as possible. A snug, but not death-squeezing, base ring is vital to keeping your cage in place.

How to Measure for Chastity Cage: Finding the Right Pre-Made Cage

If you’re in the goldilocks zone for both length and girth, you can probably find a cage and ring combo that very closely matches your measurements. But that’s not the case for most wearers. If instead you’re blessed with a “non-standard” set of measurements, you’ll have to either have a custom cage built to your requirements or make do in some way.

In most cases, “making do” may look like an off-the-rack cage that doesn’t fit quite right. These not “quite” right cages can still be worn, but they’re probably going to be a bad fit for long-term, multiple-day wear sessions.

Preventing Pitfalls #4: Ignoring Pain

Making do shouldn’t be painful or uncomfortable. If you’re using a device that doesn’t match your measurements, make sure you keep a close eye on things during the first few periods of wear. If there’s any pain or discoloration, the cage isn’t the right fit.

Going larger than your measurements will result in a looser fit. Inversely, going smaller will result in a tighter fit. Usually up to around ½ an inch in either direction doesn’t make a huge difference, but any more than that and you’re likely to start running into problems.

Tip: Many cages now come with a set of scrotum/base rings rather than a single one. These are all different sizes. If you don’t fit neatly into a “standard” size, consider picking up one of these cages with a set of rings. This can offer more flexibility for finding the right fit for your body.

Preventing Pitfalls #5: Not Minding your Testicle Skin

Don’t forget the gap!

Even if you find a cage that accurately matches your measurements though, there’s still one more area that can cause problems. Some people refer to this as the “gap”. The gap is simply the space at the bottom of the device, between the ring and the main body. This is where your scrotum skin goes, and allows your testicles to dangle freely while you wear the cage.

An arrow points to "The Gap" on a chastity cage, showcasing the space between the base ring and the tube of the cage.

While you can try and measure the scrotum skin to get an accurate idea of how much of a gap you’ll need, it’s not an easy part of your body to actually measure. As a rule of thumb though, you can look at your testicles for an idea.

If your testicles sit high and tight to your body, you’ll usually need a cage with a larger gap. If your testicles hang low and far away from your body, you’ll be fine with a smaller gap.

As you’re intimately aware, your testicles loosen and tighten throughout the day, so you’ll want to err on the side of your “tighter” motions.

How to Measure for Chastity Cage: Fufu Clips

Chastity cages aren’t the only devices designed for chastity. The relatively new Fufu chastity clip offers an alternative way to restrict erections by hiding the penis completely and using the scrotal skin to create the look of a vulva. While these won’t appeal to everyone, they are an ideal chastity solution for people who want a flatter front or often wear thinner clothing that might expose a regular cage.

Fufu clips come in three different sizes: the lite, the original and the grande. With these options comes the natural question – which size do you need?

Unlike chastity cages, there aren’t a simple set of measurements you can take to figure this out. Instead it simply comes down to how much scrotal skin you have and how loose it is.

To put on a fufu clips chastity cage, you:

  • Hold the fufu clip up to the body
  • Pull the scrotal skin through the innermost loop of the device
  • Push the shaft of the flaccid penis really, really firmly against yourself, pushing the shaft “inside of the body”, positioning the urethral right at the top-most curve of the innermost loop, above the area where you have your scrotal skin hanging
  • Tuck the scrotal skin you’ve pulled through the innermost loop down and underneath the outermost loop
  • Pull the scrotal skin upwards, along both sides of the outermost loops, to create the “labia” look you’re looking for

If your scrotal skin is tight, or you don’t have much of it, you’ll struggle to wrap the skin around and tuck it into the outer ring, so the lite option is better for you. If you have loads of scrotal skin and it hangs loose, then the grande will be more appropriate. Everything in between will work best with the classic.

While it sucks not to have a clear idea of what size you need until you try a Fufu clip for yourself, there are plenty of stores selling bundles that include all three sizes, so you can experiment freely until you find the right fit.

(On the bright side, Fufu Clips are much less plastic-intensive, so they’re more budget-friendly than their chastity cage counterparts.)

Next Time, Measure Again

Even if you already know your measurements, it’s important to take them again before buying an additional cage.

If you wear your chastity cage often enough, you may experience chastity shrinkage, which causes the penis to become smaller, when flaccid, with consistent wear. That means you’ll need a smaller cage after a while, so you’ll need to measure again.

Even if you aren’t a constant chastity wearer, skin is skin, and you may find that injuries or aging cause your skin to hang in a way they didn’t use to.

Plus, it’s an excuse to touch yourself. That’s not such a bad thing. ;)
