“Dare…To Try Bisexuality” Book Review

"Dare...To Try Bisexuality" Book Review
The front cover

UPDATE MARCH 2020: This book is no longer in production. Which, y’know, makes sense. Maybe the idea of “trying on” someone’s sexuality is a bit of an insensitive topic. It’s weird how far our society has come on progressive topics just within the past ten years. Seriously, it’s so weird/impressive. Either way, this book remains in its original form here on Kinky World for anyone looking for information on this book. Hopefully my review aged a bit better. “Dare…To Try Bisexuality” is a short, easy read about bisexuality published by Hunter House Books. It’s one of the books in the larger “Dare…” series which includes other things like bondage, anal sex, among others. The book was originally written in France by Pierre Des Esseintes and is translated into English by Yvonne K. Fulbright. The book is small in physical size and is about the size of my open palm. Since the book is only 100 pages long, it’s relatively small in thickness as well. This makes it an extremely easy read. I’d say that reading this all the way through took me a little over an hour, and I actually feel like I learned some things about reading this as well.

The front of the book is absolutely adorable! I love the little blonde girl looking surprised and the little brown girl looking so innocent. The artist, Arthur de Pins, did an amazing job with the art on this one. The front of the book isn’t exactly discreet, so it may not be the best choice to take out in public. As for the back, it does say “bisexuality” in large letters, so it may not be the best choice for public reading either.

The book focuses on both male and female bisexuality. While most books or information about bisexuality focuses on the female side, this book ends up including both female and male which is great. The book does seem to focus on the fact that females are bisexual because of romance and soft seduction while males are usually purely attracted to the idea of a penis and don’t care much about the man behind it. I’m not sure if this is a normal male thing when it comes to bisexuality or if the book just made a bit of a generalization.

Something I thought was neat about the book was how it mentioned that bisexuals usually have it pretty difficult. Most people don’t speak about bisexuality, and heterosexuals usually think they are half homosexual while homosexuals think they just can’t pick a side. This puts bisexuals right in the middle of both different “worlds” which can cause some grief.

"Dare...To Try Bisexuality" Book Review
Some of the inner pages

The bisexuality book does a good job constantly capturing your attention. This is because the text is relatively large coupled with the fact that there are lots of different real-life stories thrown throughout the text. It’ll talk about something then give a quotation from a bisexual person who’s gone through their point. Having the real-life examples sprinkled throughout the text makes the text much more fun and easy to read through. Plus, the author writes in a friendly manner that makes you more interested in their point.

I’m a bit confused as to the topic of this book – Bisexuality is something I’ve always considered to be a sexual preference – not really something you can just “do”. I suppose they were wanting to get at allowing yourself to be open to new sexual experiences, but for me, a bisexual, reading through the book, I feel like it just enforced some of the points of being bisexual without really giving much on the “how-to” aspect of it. It basically enforces the idea that it’s okay to be bisexual, but since bisexuality is really more of something that you already are, I feel like there’s really not much they could do to “give” you pointers on how to be bisexual. I think that paragraph makes sense. I think.

The book is split into 8 basic chapters: Bi: In-between two sexualities or both at once?, Bisexual Men – Who are they?, “Couple, Both Bisexual”, What about the Women?”, An Interview with Dr. Jean-Roger, Bi In Bed, Quiz: Are you Bi?, Where to Find Other Bisexuals.

As you can tell, these chapters are all pretty basic. Two of the eight chapters are just a full chapter with an interview – one with Dr. Jean-Roger about the issue of bisexuality and the other is with a swinger couple made up of two bisexuals. They both talk about why they are attracted to the same sex and how it changes their sex life. The quiz is just a short quiz to let you know if you know you’re bisexual – this quiz is more intended as a joke than anything else.

The neatest chapter out of this book is the Bi in Bed chapter. This is basically a small collection of sex positions for threesomes – including both M/M/F threesomes as well as F/F/M threesomes. There are illustrations of some of the positions and text for other positions. While I’m sure this isn’t as thorough as one of their other books about having group sex, it does provide some great positions for group sex that I honestly had never thought of.

While I’m a bisexual myself, and the idea of “trying” bisexuality is something I don’t have to consider pursuing, I actually still enjoyed reading this book. It gave enough insight into other people’s experiences that it was an amazing read. I’ve never thought about how male view bisexuality nor any of the experiences of any of the rest of the opinions included in this book. It was actually really enjoyable to read – even though I had no intention of needing to try bisexuality.
