The Sex IQ DVD Game is a game sold by TheirToys that is one of the first of its kind for a sex game. Instead of playing with a board, this comes with a disk that goes into your DVD player and gives you an interactive DVD game. All that comes with this game is the disk itself as well as a small sheet of instructions. This game is intended for two players whether those two players be two single players or two teams.
This packaging is slightly overkill, but most DVD/games are packaging overkill. The cardboard box comes with a little white tray inside. The white tray can be pulled out, and you’ll get the disk (which is kept in a cardboard sleeve) and a page of instructions. There is no reason to read the paper instructions – everything the paper says is explained during the game itself. The paper will not help you troubleshoot in case the DVD doesn’t work – it just explains the game rules.
The game doesn’t really take anything to play besides a DVD player and a remote. Another reviewer said that the DVD ran slowly on her DVD player, so I’d imagine that cheaper DVD players probably won’t run this optimally. However, this could also be played on any computer that has a DVD-compatible CD drive (anything made within the last five years most likely does.). We ended up playing our DVD on the boyfriend’s Playstation 3 which worked out amazingly since the controller made it easy to control the options and the game itself. The PS3 ran the disk with no problems and no loading times aside from the game-made ones.
This game is played pretty simply. It’s kinda like “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” but not really. There are 20 rounds in this game. If you play with two players, you both take turns answering one question at each round to attempt to move up to the next round. If you get that question wrong, you repeat the round and get a strike. Three strikes and you lose. You are supposed to get as high up in rounds as possible. When you lose, the game will tell you your “Sex IQ”. If you are playing with two players, it will let you know which one of you two won the game.
The different rounds are all relatively fun. Some are true/false, some are multiple choice, and some require speaking the answer to the television then checking your answer. (Your other players should keep you truthful.) Each one of the different rounds has a different “theme” to it. For example, round 17 is always a picture of a woman, and you have to guess “female or shemale”. Round 3 always shows you a picture of breasts and asks “Real or Fake”. Round 14 (which most people will end up losing the game at most of the time.) shows you a kama-sutra esque picture and asks you to name the position they’re in. Round 10 always shows a scrambled picture of a sex toy and asks you to name what type of toy it is. Round 5 always shows you a scrambled list of words to a pick up line and guess what line it is.
This is a bit where I was a bit annoyed by the game at times. For example, the Round 2 question had asked us what a foreign language’s name for “testicle” was then Round 3 was whether this woman’s breasts were real or fake. I felt like Round 2’s question was much harder than Round 3. Plus, on subsequent playthroughs, it becomes obvious that the final round you hit will be dependant on luck. It doesn’t seem like some questions that appear at the same rounds are actually the same difficulty. Of course, when this is just a party game, it really doesn’t matter, but it can get to be frustrating if you want to get the highest rating possible. The highest I’ve ever managed to get is round 17, but maybe more playthroughs will help me hit a higher ranking.
The questions all seem to be varied enough. With three random playthroughs with two players, we didn’t come across the same question twice. According to the box, there are over 1,000 questions, so this game should make it easy to playthrough without hitting the same questions.
The announcer was probably the most annoying part of the game. In between each round of each player, the announcer gets in his little speech and bad puns. For example, most of the time, player 2’s turn is announced by “Time for Sloppy Seconds!”. I know that the announcer is just attempting to amuse the player while the DVD loads, but it doesn’t stop the game from being slightly annoying listening to this guy. Bad puns are all over this game, but it’s pretty easy to talk over and ignore in a big group setting.
We didn’t have much of a problem with loading times. The game seemed to function just fine between questions. However, the biggest thing is the time between the questions that the game was made with. For each question, you listen to the announcer tell you if it’s wrong or right (without actually telling you the right answer.), gives you another pun, announces what player’s turn it is, and then gives another bad pun while we watch ourselves move up the Round board, THEN we get our next question. It isn’t horrible for a larger group, but if you were playing this by yourself, the wait time between questions could get a bit old. However, even with that, the full time for a game varies depending upon how high up you get, but getting to round 17 with one player only took fifteen minutes.
The game was enjoyable – I’ll give it that. It’s fun to play with a DVD instead of a board like the rest of the sex games are. In fact, I really liked the DVD format more even though it did take a bit between questions. If the wait time between questions was reduced, I’d like it even more. As it stands, I want to invite over all of our friends to try playing this game because it was pretty amusing – this is a game with some great replayability and it’s fun in large groups or just by yourself.
