The three different floggers

The Floggerella Floggers are cute, beginner-orientated floggers intended to start you off into BDSM. Despite being beginner-orientated, they are not cheap nor going to fall apart on you. The tails are made of leather, and the handle is made of plastic. The flogger also features a hanging strap that works for easy care of the flogger. The tails are 11″ long with the entire flogger being 18″ long.

You know, just to let you guys know what I do for the sake of science (of sex toy reviewing, of course), I actually bought all three varieties of these floggers to see if there was any sort of variation in the type of leather used. A commenter had mentioned differences in the leather, but it was hard to believe someone who commented once and left, so I chose to take matters into my own hands.

It’s worth noting that I didn’t purchase these for my own use. The floggers are a bit too small and too flimsy for me to actually want to use them for kinky practices. Instead, I bought the little set as my “subbie flogger” set. The boyfriend loves to play with my floggers, but like a kid, he almost always ends up hitting himself somehow. After he kept hitting himself in the face, I forbade him from playing with the floggers. Now I bought him this little set for him to play with, so he can play the “uber Domme”. (Yes, that was patronizing. But funny. And yes, it’s consensual.)

Each one of the flogger’s tails are leather. Each flogger has 10 different tails on the flogger as well. The floggers ARE actually made of different types of leather. I was actually pretty surprised when I received the floggers. Don’t ask me to name the different types of leather since I’m not *that* good, but they are different. Even the Leatherbeaten website doesn’t list the different leather types. (However, you can see that they also sell this in metallic blue, dark blue, and red.)

In order of softness, black is easily the softest. It’s probably one of the softest leathers I’ve felt. It feels more like running your fingers through velvet than any sort of leather. It’s the most pliable as well. The tails are very limp (not a bad thing), so they are very pliable and move really easily. For example, when held upright, the tails fall straight back down around the handle. Out of all of the Floggerellas, this one is by far the softest and sensual. It can leave a stinging sensation if struck roughly, but for most moderate swings, this one feels just *there*. It’s not heavy enough to be thuddy, but if it had more tails, it would be thuddy. It just feels more like being hit with a piece of cardboard on the flat end. You know you’re being hit, but it doesn’t really hurt at all.

The pink is the second/middle of the softest. (As a note, I’m not sure where EF got this pretty, pink metallic one, but that’s not the one I received. Mine is pink and matte.) They seem to match about the same texture as you’d expect to find in suede. They’re soft, but they are not baby soft. The tails aren’t quite as pliable, and while they don’t fall straight down, they only get about 1/4 inch away from the handle before falling back down. This one is a bit more stingy than the black one. Moderate swings will produce a bit of sting while heavy swings definitely produce swing. Light swings can still feel more *there* than stingy though. Again, the cardboard example rings true for this one.

The purple leather is the most least soft and pliable. The leather is still softened leather, but this leather feels more like the type of leather you’d expect to find on the outside of high-quality, softened leather cuffs than in most sensual floggers. This one easily produces the most sting. Moderate swings will produce swing, but you can still get away with a bit more of a thuddy feel with lighter swings. Because the tails are less pliable, this one does provide a thuddy feeling better than the other two do. The tails stay about a 1/2 inch away from the handle of the flogger to give you an idea of the stiffness of the tails.

Handling is the same for all three floggers. The handle ends up being a pretty decent size for being a flogger, and it easily allows you to swing the flogger with no issue. The flogger isn’t long enough for scene flogging, but it does work just fine for more personal flogging uses. The flogger is easy to control, and it’s definitely very lightweight and doesn’t tire out the wrist. The hanging strap *could* be used as a wrist strap. Two of my three floggers could have it used as a wrist strap, but it was a tight fit, and on the third, the strap was too short to fit my wrist. It’s much more useful as a hanging strap though. Along with this, the flogger does hit pretty loudly, so if being quiet is an issue, this is not the flogger for you. It’s actually amusing how loudly it hits. For being so tiny, it sounds more like a heavy slap of a paddle.

So what about usage? Well, I personally wouldn’t take these out to a kink event unless you have something in mind. If you attempt to flog people with these, you may get a couple weird looks since they don’t look very “kinkster”-like. However, if you were using these for genital flogging (because of the small size), it would make a lot more sense and people may ask you where to find some. Because of the smaller size, using these for flogging of the back/large areas in public may make you look silly while using them for smaller areas makes you look like a genius.

I like that these floggers are travel-friendly as well. Some of my other floggers are really big and can be hard to carry if we’re going on a vacation or to a friend’s house. These fit into a bagpack (Or even most men’s jean’s pockets) just fine with no issue. It makes storage and traveling with the floggers really nice.

The biggest selling point, however, is their ability to work well for newbies. When I recommend a flogger to someone who is curious, I don’t want it to be uber-expensive. I also don’t want it to be craptastic. This is nice because, while Leatherbeaten cut down on the number of tails to make it affordable, this is ACTUAL softened leather in a quality flogger at a really affordable price. Looking at my choices, there are a couple other options in this price range. The Rubber Whip series which is stingy and not realistic to kink nor sensual. There are also “leather” whips which are made from mostly stingy and unsoftened leather which won’t give a sensual experience either. And most of those whips are more expensive too. Of course, then we have some random items from CalExotics as well which aren’t worth sending a newbie to. This is something that, while it’s not for me, is perfect because you get a real experience into how real BDSM fabrics feel without spending a lot of money.

Along with this, if you want to make a neat little set, I enjoy how the three Floggerellas work together to provide differing sensations. You can start off with the black one for a bit of sensual feeling, move to the purple for more thuddy sensation, then move to the pink for the stingy sensation. It’s really neat how they work together.

For your first couple uses, you should make sure to be aware that your flogger may shed pieces of the leather. The black one is easily the worst about it; it sheds for a lot longer than the other two. The other two do shed though, and to reduce the shedding of the tiny bits, shake it over the garbage can before use. For cleaning, leather does not like soap. It really doesn’t like water either. You can wipe it down with a slightly damp washcloth, or if you really want to take care of it, there is leather cleaner at most mass merchandisers. For storage, I highly recommend hanging the flogger by the hanging strap at the base of the flogger.

These floggers are cute. They aren’t for “professionals” or people like myself who shell out $200 on a single flogger, but if you need an intro to flogging but don’t want to get a bad intro on a bad toy or want to make sure that you get an authentic experience, Leatherbeaten does deliver. As a recap, the black one is more sensual, the pink is more stingy, and the purple is more thuddy. Pick whichever one suits your needs.
