What is a Wartenburg Pinwheel?
Welcome to another edition of “things kinky people have perverted!”
On today’s episode, we learn about the Wartenburg Pinwheel – which is actually a medical device used to test nerve sensitivity.
In a medical setting, the spikey “wheel” is systematically rolled across skin. This can help suss out the boundaries of any numbness or reduced sensation compared to other areas of skin surrounding it.
This, presumably, was quicker and easier than poking their patients, over and over, with sharp, pointy objects.
Nowadays, Wartenburg Pinwheels (while still used in medical practices) are often used in kink settings. They’re cheap, really beginner-friendly, and look way more terrifying and fear-inducing than they actually are.
(Hilariously, if you Google “Wartenburg Wheel”, half the results will be medical commercial listings, and the rest will be kinky people teaching you how to use them. So that’s fun.)
The Basics
The Liebe Seele X-Rose Wartenburg Pinwheel is about the same size as your standard Wartenburg Wheel, and it’s made out of the same types of material too.
This particular one is made from plated stainless steel.
It’s 17.5cm (6.9 inches!) in total length. The handle is almost exactly 5 inches in total length.
Unlike most Wartenburg Wheel options on the market, the X-Rose is available in multiple colorations (silver, pewter, and rose gold) and multiple wheel variations (1, 3, 5). You can essentially “customize” your wheel to match your vibe!
Liebe Seele X-Rose Wartenburg Pinwheel Review: Let’s Talk Rolling
Ooooh, this one rolls smooth. There are no sticks or friction points on the wheel of this Wartenburg Wheel. It simply glides over skin. It’s yummy.
It also does so while making virtually zero noise. You’ll get a slight thud as the metal-touches-metal when you first touch the Liebe Seele X-Rose Wartenburg Pinwheel onto the skin, but this wheel is perfectly oiled; there is no squeaking to be found here. It glides silently, ready to surprise your recipient wherever you go without notifying everyone in your apartment building.
It feels like a Wartenburg Wheel. If you’ve never used one, it essentially feels like a sharp fingernail being run along the skin. With light pressure, it can almost be a tickling sensation (just like a fingernail!). With firm pressure, it can feel a bit more painful.
One of the first things people think of when they see a beautiful pinwheel like the Liebe Seele X-Rose Wartenburg Pinwheel is blood, though, and that isn’t really realistic. This pinwheel does not draw blood with any sort of ease. I think you’d have to spank someone with it with all of your body weight behind each swing.
When I use all of my strength to try to run this along my own thigh, it still doesn’t draw blood. I think I’d, literally, need to stand over someone and push my entire bodyweight into rolling this on the skin to have the potential to draw blood.
It is not designed to draw blood, and it does not do so without intentionally going out of your way to try.
(It can, however, scratch the surface of the skin or leave little dots along the skin with intense amounts of pressure.)
That means you get a lovely sensation play toy that’s relatively beginner-friendly. If fingernails dragging along your skin is your idea of erotic, this Wartenburg Wheel can be within your wheelhouse of delicious sensation.
Liebe Seele X-Rose Wartenburg Pinwheel: Let’s Talk Handling
So, we know that it rolls really easily.
But how does it feel to hold it?
Pretty good! I’ll say that the handle feels surprisingly slender in my fingers, but I find that any Wartenburg Wheel feels weirdly small in my fingers. I want to grasp it, fist-like, like a sword hilt, but the small diameter of any wheel feels a bit odd when I try that.
Instead, when I hold it like a precise instrument (thumb and middle finger gripping the shaft with the pointer finger on top, guiding the tip), it feels really comfortable. The flat, grooved texture of the shaft makes it fit between my middle finger and thumb really nicely. The blunted, lightly-rounded edges of the very base of the handle fits comfortably up against my palm, and it doesn’t hurt or feel unpleasant.
It just feels like an all-around comfortable toy to hold.
However, as it’s entirely made from stainless steel, make sure your hands are mostly dry and unlubricated if you want a “good” grip on the toy. There is no silicone or grippy material on the Liebe Seele X-Rose Wartenburg Pinwheel to keep your fingers from sliding around if you introduce wetness or lube.
Luckily, the smooth, flat design of the handle also makes it easy to wipe down. If you’re mid-play and want to use the toy, it can be wiped down with a paper towel or soapy washcloth to help you get a better grip on it.
(If your hands are REALLY lube-y, you could even use one of those rubber gripping mitts to hold it, but you both may burst into a fit of giggles with the look of that one.)
How Many Wheels Do You Want?
The Liebe Seele X-Rose Wartenburg Pinwheel is (currently) available in three different variants: one-wheel, three-wheel, and five-wheel.
They all behave exactly the same way. Your two big differences:
- Larger wheels cover more surface area.
- Larger wheels can look more terrifying. Oddly enough, as you continue to add more wheels onto the Wartenburg Pinwheel, it can start to look more and more like a dangerous torture wheel you’d find in a video game. Some people find that aspect hot as heck.
Sensation-wise, “sharp pointy object” feels oddly similar whether you have one wheel or five. Especially on spots of the body without a lot of pinpoint nerves or where you don’t have vision, all versions can just feel spikey.
So, whatever version of Liebe Seele X-Rose Wartenburg Pinwheel you want is up to you! There are options. Want to cover more ground and look a bit kinkier? Go for more wheels! Want to have a slender wheel that can fit into tight areas (like around the labia or between the fingers)? Go for less wheels.
It’s all up to you!
