I’ve been looking for a Kama Sutra book for ages. The boyfriend and I always have sex in the exact same sex position – missionary, and after awhile, it can get a little bit boring. However, I suck at making words change into thought processes (especially for sex), so I wanted something that had pictures and was easy to understand. When Adam and Eve offered up this amazing sex positions book for review, I had to accept their offer.
The Kama Sutra Step By Step book is a gorgeous, hardcover book with 238 pages. I wouldn’t recommend reading this book straight through since the majority of it is just positions, but I would recommend sitting down with your partner and flipping through the pictures in the book to pick out some that look interesting. To flip through, spending a decent amount of time on each page, I’d say that you’re looking at about an hour’s worth of time. The cover has “Kama Sutra” is large letters on it with pictures of naked bodies, and the back side has words that explain what the book is about. However, because of the internal content (lots, lots, and lots of naked bodies), I wouldn’t take this one out of the house. Each page is made from high-quality matte material, and the entire book is full-color. Really, the book feels high-quality and seems like this will last for years to come. This doesn’t feel like something that will be falling apart in the next ten years – even with constant use.
As you can imagine, the entire purpose of this book is to show off sex positions. In that, it remarkably succeeds. Not just succeeds – it does it amazingly. Most books will use lots of words and a couple pictures to explain what the position is supposed to entail. Not the Kama Sutra Step By Step book. Each position has at least two pictures to explain how to do the position, and the vast majority have three or four. If the position is harder than just four pictures, they even will take the next two pages in the book and make it an entire “play-by-play” of the position with about thirty pictures of how to do it. This book WANTS you to learn how to do these positions.
The book also uses quite a few features on each position to help you know how to do it. Each position will show you a five star rating of the “Kama Sensation Rating”. While it doesn’t ever tell me exactly what that means, I’d imagine it means how close and intimate the position will feel. While some of the positions have lower ratings (from behind positions), a lot of the face-to-face positions have a high star rating.
Each position will also feature at “Why it works” section on it. It will let you know the little things about this position that really will make it worth doing. It will talk about physical limitations as well – such as whether the position will be uncomfortable for people of heavier weight, pregnant women, or those of limited mobility. It also will speak some about the sensuality of the position and whether the position will rub against the clitoris.
Each position will also feature the “turn on” and “turn off” section about the position. This little section will give you hints and tips about how to make the position hotter or what you should avoid while in the position. For example, it gives things like “don’t lean on your partner”, “don’t be discouraged if it isn’t working”, “don’t stare at her”, and many others. The “turn on” part offers unique advice to each position to make it more sensual.
Each position includes a “Taking it Further” picture on it with a caption beneath. This little box will be giving you information about ways you can make the position more sensual and challenging. Sometimes the “Taking it Further” feature will include variations on the position itself, but other times it will recommend other things that can be done at the same time like a massage, playing with kinky toys, or double-penetration with a toy.
Another neat feature is the “If you liked this” one. If you liked the position, the book will recommend positions like it in its own pages that you will most likely enjoy as well because of the same stimulation it provides.
Every position in this book features the step-by-step instructions with pictures. Each picture includes a number next to it depending on what order it is and also includes a caption about what’s going on and how to do it. Sometimes, there are little arrows pointing to the picture of the couple to actually give small pointers about the action. I’m extremely impressed with this style of showing the Kama Sutra. Each position gives me more than enough information to perform the position without any sort of a problem or confusion. At the bottom of each position page, there’s a small “picture-by-picture” slideshow of the position being performed. Those don’t include instructions, but there are usually five or ten of them.
The book is laid out very simply, and it’s easy to pick up and use the first night you receive it. First, the book starts off with the introduction about what the Kama Sutra is and how this book is laid out. Next, it moves into the “Sensuous Seduction” chapter which mostly includes positions when kissing, cuddling, or hugging. There isn’t much penetration here. The next chapter is the “Intimate Union” chapter. These are all highly intimate positions for having sex. The next chapter is “Passionate Adventure” and those are of moderate intimate quality. The last chapter, “Exotic Expertise” is a collection of more difficult positions that don’t include much in the line of intimacy. The book recommends you choose a chapter based on your mood – if you want to be romantic and easy-going, choose the earlier chapters. The later chapters are more sexually-driven.
I was impressed at the variety of positions in here. There are ones that I could do easily by tonight, and there are ones that would take both the boyfriend and I weeks to build up the flexibility or strength. There are from behind, from the front, from sideways, and any other position you can imagine. Standing up, laying down, sitting down – all the different kinds are included. I’d say, considering every position takes up at least two pages, there are easily over one-hundred positions here. All of those positions vary in variety as well. They’ll be positions for you whether you are an advanced with harder positions or whether you are a beginner. And the great thing? If you are a beginner, you can build up to the harder positions.
My biggest complaint? The lack of body types. There was plenty of different races included, but all of the people included were all skinny. Most of the females had larger proportioned breasts as well. I wish the book would have included some people with some extra weight on them. Not everyone looks like the models in this book. It doesn’t affect my ability to do the positions, but it’s a little bit harder to feel sexy when you are staring at a 120 pound model when you are twice her size.
Overall, though, I’m extremely impressed with this book. This makes even the hardest of sexual positions easy to perform. No matter your skill level, you will be able to pull off some of the most sensual and physically taxing positions with the help of this book. I definitely recommend it, and I really recommend it if you want to make a fun night with your partner. Sitting down and looking through some of these, and marking your favorites with post-its, will be a nice end to a romantic evening.
