If you pay attention to the news, you’ll occasionally see fetish-related content making itself into mainstream news. Whether it’s someone caught doing kinky things in public or a new BDSM club moving into the area, mainstream news likes to keep up on some of the “kinkier” sides of sexuality. The last couple of months, you might have heard about the diaper store, Tykables, run out of Mount Prospect, Illinois.
A Chicago suburb, this moderately-sized town now features a small, unmarked storefront (with frosted glass windows) that houses the company Tykables. A diaper production company that focuses on the adult baby aspect of diaper-wearing, their new location amazes you from the first step you take in it. Doubling as a decorated pick-up location and an office, the front-half of the store functions as a giant, adult-sized nursery. From the color scheme to the wall molding (strategically placed half-way up the wall designed to make you feel “small”), it’s clear that attention was paid to the tiny details for a more realistic experience.
The decoration isn’t where the nursery aspect ends. In fact, throughout the entire front-half of the location, you’ll find adult-sized childhood favorites such as a giant crib, a huge rocking horse, a home-made high-chair, a large play mat, and a bouncer. While the store doesn’t allow public use of the items, they take advantage of the look and feel of the area to better promote their line of Tykables items and adult diapers – and it certainly provides a comfortable, smiling atmosphere if you choose to pick up your diaper order here.
Speaking of their items, Tykables currently has their solo, flagship (and well-loved) disposable overnight diaper. Believing that the diaper can be done better, Tykables started off as the “Snuggies Waddler”. Rebranded as “Tykables”, the company believes that wearing diapers is as much about the experience as about the diaper itself. Tykables was the first adult baby diaper on the market to feature the fun, well-designed packaging that you see – most diapers only come in plain white bags. The Tykables Overnight diaper also offers a smaller measurement window. While other diapers may fit a wider variety of body types, it leaves a lot of excess plastic and may not lead to a good fit; Tykables believes in having a smaller measurement span to ensure that the diaper will fit well for the body size that it’s designed for. (How many people can actually find “One Size Fits All” clothing that actually works great with their body type? That’s the Tykables approach) With a practical use capacity of 4,000ml (135 ounces), these diapers offer a longer-term wearing experience that many diaper wearers are looking for.
Continuing to want to do better and better for people who are into ABDL, the company has plans on the horizon for all sorts of new products. Expect a new line of adult-sized clothing (including polo onesies!) as well as the return of their daytime Tykables design and more. The company believes there is room to improve current ABDL offerings for high-quality and durable items that will enhance the ABDL experience. The company wants to make things that people can afford – and that people will smile about buying.
Despite the current mainstream new’s take on the store, I found out that the support from the community has been more-than-great. Council members regularly stop into the store for a pleasant chat, and the owner says he’s been surprised by how many community members seem more curious about the store (and what it represents) than upset.
For those unfamiliar with the kinky aspects of diaper wearing, most of the wearers fall into two categories: diaper lovers or adult babies. While diaper lovers enjoy wearing diapers purely for the sensations (and may not be interested in roleplaying), adult babies enjoy the roleplaying aspect that goes alongside the diaper wearing. Entire other articles focus on the reasoning behind adult baby play, but needless to say, it’s entirely separate from anything to do with biological children. People who wear diapers may enjoy actually using the diaper for its intended purpose – or some people just enjoy wearing the diaper without any intention of using it. It’s a wide, varied community.
I’m just glad to see that non-mainstream kinks are making their way into stores and conversations. Tykables has been surprised by all of the press they’ve received – and even impressed by how positive some of it has been. While a couple of news outlets have chosen to focus on the complaints of a few community members (despite the acceptance from the community as a whole), other news outlets have taken an informative and curious approach towards what the company offers – and what their customers are into.
If you’re interested in Tykables for yourself, the company ships out orders from their online store as well. You can easily pick up a two-diaper sample pack to give things a try.
