Ruff Doggie Styles now seem to be a defunct manufacturer – which is a shame because I loved the bright and feminine products they brought into the “everything is black” world of BDSM. I’m leaving this review up as a reference for anyone who wants more information about this old item. – April 2019.
If you read over some of my reviews, you’ll notice that I absolutely love the Ruff Doggie Styles products.
The Deluxe 5ft Ruff Whip doesn’t exactly have a handle, but at the handle of the whip, the diameter and weave is thicker which makes the handle a lot stiffer. At the handle, the diameter is about an inch and a half. As you move down the whip, the diameter slowly gets smaller and smaller, and by the time you’ve reached the tip, the diameter is about 1/3 of an inch. At the very end of the whip, there’s an 18 inch long piece of black string that gives the whip the ability to crack. At the top of the whip, there’s a weaved handle ball as well as a suede strap that will allow you to hang your whip off of something.
All of the suede seems weaved together really nicely. It looks like it all will stay together very well in the future, so I’m not too worried about it falling apart with repeated use. The string is really the only thing I’d be worried about, but it looks like the string was sewn straight into the whip for about two or three inches at the tip of the whip. The hanging strap seems well sewn, and the suede is of a high quality and feels very soft.
Now when I initially thought about this product, I didn’t really think about how long five feet actually was. In my head, I only thought the whip was about three feet long, and that just didn’t seem very hard to control at all. However, once I actually had the whip in my hands, I realized that it definitely is a little bit longer than first thought. It’s possible for BDSM use, but it does take a little bit of practice before you will be able to use this on a partner.
Actually using this whip is another thing to be dealt with too. When most people picture using a whip, they picture cracking it in the air to make a loud noise. If you attempt to do that on a person, you’ll most likely have crappy aim as well as it’s downright painful. That’s just not the way to use a whip like this. You want to hold the handle in one hand and hold the tip in the other, and then gently use the handle to pull the end from your other hand and let it gently hit your captive’s body. I know – with a description like that, it does take quite a bit of time to actually be able to use a whip on a human being. Because of the difficulty involved, it’s something that you should practice on a pillow, couch, or other object before taking it to a human.
The whip should also be used gently. While the suede part is heavy enough that it will feel slightly thuddy, the whip has that string on the end of it. When it comes to use, the string is most likely what your partner will end up feeling when you use the whip on them. The string, reports the boyfriend, has a stingy sensation to it and definitely can feel painful if not done with the lightest possible touch. Once you start to get practice using it, you can use more strength with the whip, but because of the string, even light touches can actually feel more painful than you intend them to.
Because of the difficulty involved with actually using this, I’d have to say that this is probably only appropriate for someone who has some moderate BDSM experience – this isn’t for a newbie. A whip can be a very dangerous impact toy to wield, and even most experts usually don’t go around them because they take lots of practice and refinement to use with skill. As long as you have moderate BDSM experience and have the will to practice to use it, it’s possible to use a whip during play though. I just wouldn’t recommend it for a beginner who wants to buy their first impact toy.
I found that the whip can be a little unwieldy at times because of the length. Most BDSM whips usually run about three feet, so this one is definitely longer than most whips mean for play usually run. I’ve been able to successfully use this in a scene multiple times now, but it does take some concentration and some attention to detail. It’s rewarding to be able to use it compared to a regular flogger or riding crop.
Care-wise, suede can be cleaned by a slightly dampened washcloth or antibacterial wipes on the surface of the toy if you wish to play with multiple partners. For the most part, this shouldnt’ need to be cleaned unless you want to share it between people. Keep this away from any sort of bodily fluids or lubricant since suede isn’t really fond of them. For storage, I recommend, if possible, finding a place where this can lay or hang out flat. Having kinks in the whip for long-term storage can end up weakening the suede.
Overall, I’d only recommend this to an intermediate or advanced BDSM player who is looking to add a new impact toy to their toybox. This whip will take lots of practice to use successfully during a scene, but the rewarding experience is worth it. It’s a high-quality whip that looks like it will last for a long time into the future, and I’m glad I own it.
