Sportsheets appears to have discontinued this exact Bondage Bar iteration. Instead, they have now have a very similar version in their “Sex and Mischief” bondage line called the “Spread the Love Bar“. This review is here for reference. – March 2019.
The boyfriend and I absolutely love using bondage restraints, but we’ve never actually tried a spreader bar before. We decided that a spreader bar with built-in cuffs for hands and feet would work best for us.
The Bondage Bar, with cuffs included, is about twenty-seven inches long. The bar itself, not including cuffs, is only seventeen inches long. The wrist cuffs laid flat measure at fourteen inches. The ankles cuffs when laid flat measure at about sixteen inches. The Bondage Bar is made from a large, flat piece of hard plastic that’s covered in nylon with an ankle cuff hanging off of each end and two wrist cuffs placed on the bar itself. Each cuff is made from neoprene and fastened with velcro. The cuffs are sewed onto the bondage bar by means of an extra strand of nylon fabric. The cuffs aren’t removable from the bondage bar.
The packaging of the Bondage Bar is pretty basic. It’s a lot bigger than I actually expected it to be. The box shows girls in sexy provocative posts wearing the bondage bar. I actually like the packaging because it allows me to see the different uses and ways that the bondage bar can be used.
The hard plastic of the bondage bar is slightly bendable. It won’t give to struggles, but it definitely has a little bit of give that helps it be more comfortable to wear. The boyfriend reports that the cuffs on the bondage bar were extremely comfortable to wear and that they didn’t make him swear nor did they make him itchy or scratchy.
The cuffs themselves appear to have little difference in size from ankle to wrist cuffs. They do have the two inches, but unless you measured, you wouldn’t have noticed. Those ankle and wrist cuff sizes are actually pretty average though, and unless you have really large wrists, I could easily see this fitting quite a majority of people quite comfortably. Jor’s wrists are tiny enough that he actually has room to spare by far. The velcro has about three inches leftover even after I fasten him at a looser setting.
Something small to note: Since it’s made from nylon, velcro, and neoprene, this entire bondage bar is actually quite waterproof. You could definitely take this into bodies of water, but I’m a little concerned about doing as such because of the lack of movement that the bondage bar gives. It could be dangerous in the case of a slip.
Overall, I was pretty impressed with the durability of the Bondage Bar. The neoprene cuffs all seem really nicely sewed onto the bondage bar, and the bondage bar hard plastic doesn’t seem like it will be pushing out of the nylon fabric anytime soon either. It looks like it will be lasting for awhile.
A couple different positions can be used if you choose to utilize the full potential of the bondage bar. (Using both the wrist and ankle cuffs at the same time) One of the sexiest positions is to have the restrained person bend over and put their ankles in the bondage bar then strap in their wrists. That one would require flexibility, and I’m a little afraid of what would happen if your bound partner tipped forward since their hands aren’t there to hold them up. Another good alternative on this position would be to do this same position while having the person lead on their side on the floor. It would allow for spooning-type sex.
Another good way to use it would be to have the bound partner lay on their bed in a doggie-style-esqe position on the floor. Then put their ankles into the ankle cuffs. From there, if your partner is flexible enough, pull their wrists into the wrist cuffs on their back. This allows for some access to the butt or crotch. However, it wouldn’t be enough access for intercourse but it would be enough for finger fun. I found that this position, because of how lanky Jor is, actually did simulate him being put into a hog-tie position. For an alternative, you could choose to have their hands come between their legs instead of behind their back.
Another position is to have the bound person squat down and attach the ankle cuffs. From there, have them put their wrist into the wrist cuffs. Think “leap frog”. This position would get tiring quickly, so count on the bound person falling onto their back somewhat soon. Most people can only hold a crouch for about five or ten minutes.
Another position: Have your bound person lay on their back and put their ankles into the cuffs. From there, you can put their wrists in. This will allow anal and vaginal access pretty nicely. No safety concerns aside from the bound person rolling over like a turtle.
If you want to use the wrist cuffs only, you could do that. The bondage bar of the restraints will keep the wrists that certain length apart. If you want to make it more fun, you could then velcro the ankle pieces onto legs of furniture (only heavy furniture PLEASE!) to bind your partner to something. You could also keep the velcro ankle cuffs fasten shut, and string rope through it to tie it to nearby objects. If you have multiple play partners, one person could have their wrists restrained while the other has their legs restrained.
If you only want to use the leg cuffs, it’s quite possible to strap them in and force them to walk around with it on. The straps have enough give that they’ll be able to do it, but it will be humorous in the process. The ankle restraints could also be used to keep the legs apart during sex or other play. However, this bondage bar isn’t the longest in length (only about seventeen inches), so it shouldn’t be confused with a spreader bar. It will spread but not anything near the amount of what spreader bars do.
For cleaning, it’s actually really easy. Because it’s waterproof, a warm washcloth and some antibacterial soap will clean it off just fine. Because it probably won’t come in contact with any bodily fluids, cleaning isn’t really a high priority for this bondage product.
Overall, I was pretty impressed with the Bondage Bar. It held up for our use, and this is the first toy that has really strained my partner to be bond in it. (That’s a good thing. He doesn’t feel exposed or bond unless he feels strained.) It offers a variety of different ways to use it, and it looks like it will last for a long time to come.
