A one-size-fits-most fetish mask, the DEVOT Zipper Mouth Muzzle is a vinyl mask with a mouth, zip-up detailing. The mask includes a fully-functional mouth zipper-detailing that grants access to the mouth. In addition, for breathing, the mask has two-holed rivets near the nostrils for breathing. The fetish half-mask is fastened to the face through the two, unremovable elastic bands on the back of the head. The exterior material of the mask is vinyl – while the interior is made from neoprene for a comfortable experience against the face.
The DEVOT Zipper Mouth Muzzle has a decent attention to detail – and durability. The internal fabric is neoprene with a layer of something soft and squishy between that neoprene layer and the external vinyl layer. These layers are all nicely sewn together with solid stitching around all of the edges except near the interior part of the zipper part. I have no idea why that part didn’t get the same stitching treatment, but it didn’t. To assist in keeping the layers of the mask nicely together, the mask has three metal rivets on each side of the cheeks. These rivets (and their coldness) can be felt on the face – though they aren’t irritating once you get past the initial chill. In addition, there are two rivets on each side to help doubly-secure the two elastic straps along the backside of this mask. There are two open breathing holes near where each one of the nostrils will hit.
With a decorative mouth mask like this, fit is important. Warmth is the first thing you notice. The mask is very, very warm. The multiple layers of material (plus vinyl) don’t make much for much breathability. Past that, the mask is very comfortable as long as the elastic bands aren’t too tight. None of the interior is scratchy, and though you can feel the interior rivets, it’s not much, and they aren’t sharp. It’s comfortable, honestly. As long as I was in a cool or cold room without much need to talk, I could wear this for a pretty long while.
The DEVOT Zipper Mouth Muzzle *can* play with eyeglasses or sunglasses, but it isn’t comfortable and leaves fog all over your lenses every time you breathe. It’s definitely a contacts-only or no-corrective-lenses type of product, unfortunately.
It’s also worth noting that the mask sits high enough on the bridge of the nose that it will creep into the corners of your vision. For some people, this can be headache-inducing. It’s not headache-inducing for me, but it’s definitely something that takes me an hour or so for my brain to “tune out”.
Getting the mask ON is actually the hardest part of the entire experience – at least for me. My partners can slide it on with a little less resistance, but for some reason, one of the back bands is particularly tight on my head – which makes it a bit hard to pull it over my head for wear. There isn’t any buckles or hooks or anything – just two sewn-in elastic bands that need to be stretched out to their maximum and slipped over-top of the head for wear. Do your hair *after* you put this mask on – or expect to need to make some touch-ups once you’re done. Any sort of hairstyle in the back of my head gets decently messed up anytime I put this on – even a standard ponytail. Anything more elaborate should probably wait until the mask is already on before you put in on.
Once the mask is on, don’t expect to be chilly. The mask is lined with a foam-ish material (no scent), but that foam-ish material means that the mask is really, really warm. You’ll notice the warmth as soon as you put it on. As long as you’re in a particularly temperature-neutral environment, you’ll be okay, but in a lot of play spaces, dungeons get pretty warm. This’ll get warm with it. If you usually run chilly in dungeons, hell yeah – this’ll be your space heater. If not, you might want to consider wearing it only short-term until you get the desired effect.
Despite being called a “muzzle”, it doesn’t do much for gagging any talking. It definitely could prevent biting, but it will still allow full speech. The mask is nowhere near tight enough to prevent that.
When wearing the mask, as could be expected, you’ll definitely have some defeaning of speech. Unzipping the mouth hole helps a bit with clarity, but if you’re already in a loud dungeon, I’d definitely recommend removing the mask before doing any negotiating or long conversations with a potential partner. Make sure to negotiate wearing the mask with your partner ahead of time. Especially for people who read lips to help determine what someone is saying or a partner with partial deafness or anxiety in loud spaces, being unable to see your mouth might become a problem (or at least a frustration). I know I’d personally be okay with it during a scene where I’m not expected to communicate much, but if my partner was wearing this all night, it’d drive me nuts (and would make communication pretty hard for me)
Final points about the zipper detailing: When the zipper is unzipped, it allows for full access of the mouth. I can’t say I’d recommend trying to use this as an oral sex point as the zipper opening isn’t particularly large – and you’ll definitely rub on that zipper material. If you just wanted to put a dick in the mouth as a lollipop (mostly stationary), you’ll be a-okay, but any sort of sliding in an out of the mouth is going to get rubbed raw really quick – and not in a good way.
The zipper does, however, allow for a bit of easier speech and breathing. It makes talking a bit more clear, but not by much. It doesn’t really allow for much of a visual of seeing the lips, either. It’s just a fully functional zipper that adds an attractive visual – and could definitely work a-okay for drinking a water bottle or sipping a straw or lots of activities that might need to happen throughout an evening.
The DEVOT Zipper Mouth Muzzle’s attention to seam detailing means it can be cleaned decently easily. I wouldn’t put it into the washer or dryer, but it should be able to be gently handwashed with detergent if you plan on sharing it with other people. (Or even if you don’t, honestly, because this is going to be in contact with your mouth and sweat all night, it really should be cleaned). Most of the mask has pretty good seam work done on it aside from the interior portion of the zipper part. Make sure you’re very careful about cleaning near there to avoid “pulling up” and “ripping” the material around that. Otherwise, the majority of it can be handwashed with gentle care like you would lingerie. Which – yay! Clean fetish clothing that can be used again and again.
