Yep. I admit it. I finished the entire book in a day. Well, it’s not because I was “dying” to read what happened, but it’s mostly because of how the author sets up chapter breaks. She’s very good at that. Most books just break because there’s a break in the action. With 50 Shades of Grey, most of the chapter breaks occur relatively in the midst of something which makes me want to read more of it. Really, I do have to give it a compliment on having well-done chapter breaks.
SO, here are my thoughts on it:
SPOILERS BELOW
What the fuck is up with their relationship? This terrifies me that women are WANTING something like this. Aside from their time inside the playroom (which, I’ll admit, is relatively BDSM-y), their relationship is an absolute mess. Anytime they attempt to have a serious conversation since both of them are constantly UP and DOWN, they end up having sex and ignoring any sort of issue. It seriously reminds me of a relationship you have in high school where the two of them are so hormonal and stupid that they constantly just have sex while having this relationship that turns the two of them into complete messes who are obsessed with each other while simultaneously hating each other.
What the fuck is up with Christian? The dude is obviously borderline on abusive. I totally get the “He’s a Dominant” thing. I do. I am too. We have strict rules and whatnot for our submissives. But Christian is constantly mood-swingy, and he’s constantly controlling. She talks to one of her male friends? He gets pissy. He calls or texts and she doesn’t respond within an hour or so? He calls and texts more. She says something wrong (which, as she’s kinda derpy, she does about every conversation), he gets instantly pissy. What? Her car? Nah. It’s not good enough. He’ll sell it for you and buy a new one.
The sex in the book is “meh”. I find virtually no reason most people should really find the sex the best part. In fact, I usually skip over most of the sex scenes. Basically, Christian decides he’s horny, gives her some random form of foreplay for like five minutes, she’s magically (and ALWAYS) wet and ready for him, he puts it in, does some thrusting, and then she orgasms – sometimes multiple times. The sex isn’t even sorta believable.
This also scares me that most people are going to see this as a BDSM relationship. That terrifies me. This is a relationship bordering on childish, immature, and possibly abusive that HAPPENS to have BDSM elements in it.
I’ll start on the second book (lies. I already started), but I’m mostly reading it to see about Christian’s past, really. I’m sure it’s going to be this insanely hard-to-believe, awful childhood that has made him this “bdsm monster”, but I’m curious.
