I’ve heard so many people say that they feel like they’re an expect in impact play just by doing it a couple times. No one ever says that about rope bondage. Yet they take about the same amount of practice to actually master.
I’ve watched a guy in our local community do rope work. It’s absolutely beautiful, and he’s definitely a pro at it. I’ve listened to him talk about how he’s gotten so good at it, and honestly, it’s a pretty breath-taking story as well.
But you just never hear anyone ask the guy flogging how he got so good. It’s kinda sad really. Everyone assumes that impact play is just so amazingly easy to master. It can actually be a problem as well when you get some novice guy who shows up at a party thinking he can wield floggers because it’s so “easy”. Many people know nothing about danger zones or about reading the bottom.
I’d have to say that the first time I watched a real expert play was when he was playing with my submissive. Now, it may have been because of his wider selection of toys, but he definitely pushed my submissive so much farther than I ever had. It was amazing to watch how well he could read him. He’d push him as far as he could with one toy, then switch to another to let him recover. I learned quite a lot of things from him that day – just watching. I’m just hoping that, one day, I can be as amazing as he is with what he does.
It’s just sad that we don’t appreciate those skilled in impact play as we do those in other play like fire, knife, wax, and needle play. I think we should all try to remember that picking up a flogger and using it properly does require lots of time and effort. Probably lots of hours of striking a pillow to learn aim, then research learning where the proper zones are, then finally learning how to read your submissive. It does take quite a bit of work, and it’s unfortunate that it’s unappreciated sometimes.

I totally agree.
I was at a play party once and these three girls borrowed floggers from some guy and proceeded to flog a man that was on one of the tables. I was horrified that they were being allowed to continue, as they repeatedly hit him in his kidneys and other areas that they should not have been hitting him. There is a definite art to it.
